Ngahape English Language Homestay
About us

Ngahape English Language homestay is unique for 5 good reasons:

1) As a student you live at the school as part of the family and join your teacher in her 'off duty' activities: going out to dinner with friends, going to the movies, going to the beach. The atmosphere is very homely and you get to experience and share the life of New Zealanders.

2) The homestead is situated in the countryside, surrounded by farmland - but only 3 minutes drive from the small village of Featherston.

3) You have PRIVATE English lessons, making it easy to shape your course to your exact needs.

4) We have total English immersion - all participants speak in English. You are not tempted to speak in your own language.

5) There is only one teacher at the homestay. Her name is Emily Friedlander. She is a registered New Zealand teacher.

I have been a teacher all my working life, starting as a secondary school teacher in England 30 years ago. Since then I have taught in Hong Kong and New Zealand. In addition to my secondary school teaching qualifications I have a TELTA qualification (Teacher of English Language to Adults) and am presently studying for my Post Graduate Diploma in Second Language Teaching from Waikato University (New Zealand).

Nine years ago I set up a 'life-style' School at Ngahape, the Ngahape English Language Homestay. I have recently moved the school to new premises, closer to local towns and to Wellington, but it is still in the countryside.

I really enjoy teaching in this environment because I can be flexible and teach students what they want to learn. Also I am able to help many students think about the big issues in their lives.

Students cooking

Most students enjoy the food that I provide and are always asking me to teach them how to cook. So once a week everyone is welcome to take part in a cooking spree in which, with a little guidance, you cook your favourite recipes.

Candle making and horse riding are also popular activities.
